What Size Wall Art Goes Above a Bed, Sofa or Fireplace?

To choose wall art above a bed or sofa, measure the furniture first. The two-thirds rule is a useful styling starting point: aim for an arrangement roughly two-thirds as wide as the furniture below it. It is not a rule of construction, a safety standard or a requirement for every room.

For a group of prints, measure the whole arrangement, including gaps and frames. For one print, use its outside framed width rather than the artwork measurement alone.

How to calculate the two-thirds rule

Multiply the furniture width by 0.67 for an approximate starting width. For example, a 180 cm sofa suggests an arrangement around 120 cm wide. A single A1 landscape artwork is 84.1 cm wide before framing, so it will be narrower than that starting point. That may be exactly the quieter look you want—or a pair may work better.

Two A2 landscape artworks, each 59.4 cm wide, with a 5 cm gap total 123.8 cm before adding frame widths. This is arithmetic, not a promise that a particular combination will fit. Measure the actual products and available space.

What size art goes above a king-size bed?

Measure your headboard: it may be wider than the mattress. If your headboard is 150 cm wide, the two-thirds starting point is approximately 100 cm. Compare a landscape print with a pair of smaller portraits using paper templates.

Allow visual space above the headboard and consider how people sit up in bed. Use fixings suitable for the wall and the full frame weight. Do not assume adhesive strips are suitable above a bed; follow the specific manufacturer’s restrictions or consult a competent installer.

Choosing a print above a sofa

Look at the print from where you enter the room and from your usual seating position. A detailed photograph can reward closer viewing, while bold illustrated artwork may remain readable from farther away.

Centre the arrangement over the sofa if that looks balanced in the room, rather than automatically centring it on the entire wall. Nearby windows, lamps and shelves may justify moving it. Make a paper template and live with the position before making holes.

Artwork above a fireplace needs a different check

A mantel or chimney breast can define a smaller visual area than the furniture in a room. Start with that available width, and keep the artwork clear of surrounding trim.

Heat and soot matter more than a decorative ratio. Check the fireplace and artwork guidance before placing a print above an active fire. Do not drill into a chimney breast without checking the construction, flue and concealed services. If you cannot establish a safe position, choose another wall.
